Bogota, Feb 19 (EFE).- Colombia's Constitutional Court has ruled that homosexual couples can adopt but only if the child is the biological offspring of one of the partners in the relationship.
Judge Jose Roberto Herrera made the ruling on Wednesday after the constitutional court turned to him for a decision after its vote ended in a draw.
Following a debate of more than eight hours, Herrera declared that the only way same sex-couples could adopt is if one of the partners was the biological parent of the child.
The executive director of the NGO Colombia Diversa, Mauricio Albarricin and a champion of LGBT rights, said he was pleased by the decision.
Before the ruling, the president of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Conference of Colombia, Luis Augusto Castro had argued against adoption by same-sex couples.
